Are there any legitimate companies that can help you with debt consolidation?

My husband and I have about $23,000 in debt and are considering going to one of the many debt counseling companies that we see advertised. Can they really help by working with the credit card companies ? Also do they all charge a fee and how do they work? Refinancing our home is currently not a option.

You hear of so many scams out there. How do you know a reputable organization when you see therm? What are are the best options? A compay with a Christian foundation is preferred. Thanks

My mother has a lot of credit card debt and asked me to research debt consolidation?

She has over $25,000 of debt and has trouble making the minimum payments. We do not own a home and pay rent and auto loan monthly as well as the usual expenses. I looked at debt consolidation loans, and debt counseling sites and there is so much conflicting information. Anyone who has gone through the same or works in the field any advice?

consolidation but charges a $40 fee. They also do credit counseling (which I don’t need.) I just need to lower my monthly payments because of high interest. I don’t want a service like credit conseling to effect my credit score. Any response would be appreciated.
I definately don’t need any credit counseling as much of my debt was accrued through phenomenal interest.
I just want to have one payment a month with the lowest possible interest.

I am trying to get a debt consolidation loan to pay off all my credit card debt. Most are telling me that my debt/income ratio is too high… my credit score is good. I do not want to do a debt counseling program or something like that… just anyone or bank that is understanding and will help me pay these off? I know the debt/income ratio is high… but I want to pay off that debt and have one loan. They won’t approve me because I already have too much debt… so what’s the point of trying to consolidate when they are afraid of the debt I have? Anyone else been in this situation? Please help! Thank you!
